Events & seasons

Chikkamagaluru runs on seasons rather than a calendar of events. What is worth coming for depends far more on the month than on the date.

Coffee harvest

October to February

The estates pick, pulp and dry through these months, and it is the only time of year you can join in rather than just watch. Mornings start early and the whole district smells of drying cherry.

Harvest experiences

Trekking season

October to March

Routes reopen as the ground dries, and the clear mornings make the summits worth the alarm. A certified guide is compulsory on approved forest routes.

Permits and rules

River rafting

October to December

The Bhadra runs high enough for rafting only in the months just after the monsoon. Outside that window the operators are not on the water.

Rafting trips

Waterfalls at full flow

July to November

Hebbe, Sirimane, Kallathigiri and Manikyadhara are at their most dramatic during and just after the rains. Several approaches need a jeep once the tracks soften.

Waterfall hikes

Birding

November to March

Migrants arrive over the winter and the Bhadra backwaters are at their best. Early morning, always — by nine the day is over for birds.

Birding walks

Quiet season

April to June

Hot, hazy and empty. The falls thin out and some forest routes close for fire risk, but rates are at their lowest and you will have the estates to yourself.

Off-season stays

Temple festivals and local fairs

Sringeri and the district's older temples keep a busy calendar, and the village jatres are worth going out of your way for. Almost all of them follow the lunar calendar, so the dates move by weeks from one year to the next.

We do not print dates here for that reason — one wrong date and somebody plans a trip around it. Ask your host when you book: they will know what is on that week, and it is usually the thing you would never have found on your own.
